"African poetry brings out the dilemma of individuals caught between two worlds." Discuss this view with reference to any three poems of your selection in Poems of Black Africa. In Poems of Black Africa, there are some Africans who find themselves in foreign cultures where initially, they believed they could derive the best for themselves and their families.

When they fail to achieve this, they regret losing contact with their original cultures of Africa. We shall be justifying this with poems such as "He Walks Alone" by Lenrie Peter's, "Pardon Me" by Ismael Hurreh and "A Common Hate Enrich Our Love and Us" by Dinis Brutus. Lenrie Peter's presents an African in a foreign land in "He Walks Alone" He finds himself a complete stranger as he no longer enjoys the company he once enjoyed while he was in Africa. As a result, he regrets as he moves on the streets with his head lowered among the whites. While abroad he tries to adapt to the white man's way of dressing but realises that the suit is no longer of any value even when it is ironed.

In this dilemma he is distressed as he is neither with his African culture nor European culture. Back home in Africa he had talents which sadly enough, are of no use in the whitman's land. This rejection makes him nostalgic when he thinks about his former culture. Going abroad has a telling effect on him as he loses his identity, culture, religion, race, nationality, ideology, things which define the African persoccrnality.

In the poem "Pardon Me", Ishmael Hurreh presents the speaker who after spending a long time abroad, detached from his ancestral roots returns home asking his father to pardon him for his inability to imbibe the war-like spirit of his father. He has abandoned the family culture of saying morning prayers and has given deaf ears to the parents' advice. He has even gon to the extent of desecrating the mother's grave by digging out her remains to construct a modern house. He apologises that what has pushed him into such an error is hi long stay in the whiteman's country, detached from his roots. He can therefore be seen as a child of two worlds and ask for forgiveness for this unfortunate predicament.

Finally, in the poem" A Common Hate Enriched Our Love and Us" by Denis Brutus, we notice a cultural alienation that leaves an individual in a dilemma. In this poem some people find themselves in apartheid condition simply because they compromise the fight for equality with the desire for material comfort and sensual pleasures. The prefer to dine and drink wine with the oppressors than to join their fellow black brothers to fight for social equity. The speaker denounces these people who are Africans but are caught between two worlds.

The poems discussed above and many others are glaring examples of poems of the selection of Poems of Black Africa which bring out the dilemma of individuals caught between two worlds.
